Housekeeping Skills
Keeping your lab worksurfaces clean is an important housekeeping skill. There are several steps to follow to keep your workspace spick-and-span.
The first step is to clean the surface with hot water and a soft sponge. Do not use anything abrasive during the cleaning process. If the stain or contaminate persists, you can add a mild dish detergent or window cleaner to the process. If it is more stubborn you can soak in a solution of soap – water (1:3). Leave the solution on the surface for a few minutes and then wipe dry. Additionally, you may use organic solvents like acetone or alcohol. If you must scrape something off, please use a plastic or wooden spatula to avoid scratching the surface. You will then remove all traces of any detergent to avoid streaking. Finally, wash with pure water and wipe the surface dry with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.
Please follow your lab’s safety protocol if you have spilled an acid or other harmful substance and wipe up spills immediately. Practicing basic housekeeping daily will add to the longevity of the material and subsequently your lab.
